May I invoke your good offices in a matter in
regard to which action through official channels has led to
It concerns a certain aerial ropeway, which
runs from the Military Magazine in Hong Kong cross the
site of the Naval Arsenal Depot. The question is whether
you want us to keep the ropeway fter the site has been
handed back to the Hong Kong Government by the Admiralty;
and, if so, whether the War Office would accept liability
for the cost of necessary diversion and for the payment of
a proportionate sum to cover such depreciation as the
Naval Arsenal Yard might suffer, as a building site,
from the retention of the diverted ropeway.
He wrote officially to you on the 24th June last
to put these questions. You replied on the 8th June that
